Fifty years ago, in 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. The Vietnam war was winding down, the Woodstock music festival took place, and one Jennifer Aniston was born. These events might not all hold the same historical significance, but Aniston celebrating her fiftieth birthday on February 11th of this year is impressive in its own right.
Aniston has aged incredibly well, and it’s noticeable enough to make you wonder how she’s stayed so fit and beautiful for half a century. Aniston has several routines, tips, and tricks that she has credited with some of her graceful aging. Lucky for us, she’s been open with her best anti-aging secrets. Read on to learn more!
1. She Takes Sleep Seriously.
Aniston has mentioned previously that she has frequently suffered from insomnia. A good night’s sleep is crucial to good mental and physical health, so it only makes sense that Aniston does her best to combat her insomnia with a strict sleep routine. Aniston reports that she tries to meditate for at least five minutes before bed; she’ll also fit in some simple yoga stretches if she has the time. Showers, Aniston claims, always help her fall asleep, even if they’re only three minutes long. A warm shower can help you relax and wash away some of the stressors of the day, which makes drifting off into peaceful slumber that much easier.
Most important, she has committed to keeping her cell phone at least five feet away from her bad when she’s trying to wind down for the night. Keeping your phone just out of reach can make a big difference, according to Aniston. It makes it that much harder to distract yourself with electronics and that much easier to close your eyes. If you struggle to fall asleep, try Aniston’s trick and see if putting your phone just out of reach can help you drift off.
2. It’s all about the healthy fats
A glass of warm lemon water and either a shake or some avocado and eggs are what get Aniston up in the morning. Alternately, she might eat millet cereal or oatmeal with a banana if she craves something different. She’s also a big fan of smoothies, particularly those featuring bananas, cherries, greens, and protein. For lunch, she’ll often have a salad, maybe followed by a snack of apples and almond butter.
Her Popular Diet
Aniston generally keeps to a diet of high protein, low carbs, and low sugar. While she indulges occasionally, she generally avoids starchy foods and “white” foods (like white bread, for example), which are often low in nutrients. That said, she has stated that she no longer feels the need to give herself strict rules as to what she can and can’t eat. “It’s pretty clear,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. “Eat as much organic fruits and veggies as you can, keep sugar [intake] low, drink tons and tons of water.”
While it is important to eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients you need to keep you looking beautiful and youthful, you might consider investing in a multivitamin. That way, you can be sure that your body is not lacking anything it needs.
3. Water and Sunscreen Are a Must
Aniston’s passion for staying hydrated goes beyond her diet and is also essential to her skincare regimen. Her morning face routine is simple soap and water, but that’s partly because Aniston promotes a total-body skin care regimen instead. Aniston is a big proponent of getting your daily water requirements in order to keep your skin healthy, and the science backs her up. Beyond that, she recommends sleeping well (see our sleep paragraph above!) and finding a sunscreen that works for you.
While Aniston used to be something of a sunbathing fanatic, she’s since come around to the benefits of sun protection instead. With what we know now about the connection between sun exposure and skin cancer, that’s a smart way to live. A daily dose of sunscreen can prevent wrinkles in the long term, and even more importantly, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. If you incorporate sunscreen into your daily skin care, your body will thank you!
4. Find an Exercise Routine You Can Stick With
It’s easy to imagine that celebrities do nothing but work on maintaining their physique, maybe with an expensive personal trainer or through strange workout rituals. It’s refreshing, then, to hear about a celebrity like Aniston whose exercise patterns are so (relatively) attainable. Aniston works out for about an hour a day, six days a week, and takes Sundays off. Her exercises of choice are pretty straightforward: she likes treadmills, elliptical machines, and spinning. She also likes variety, and makes it a point to switch up which machine she uses or what pace she’s moving at.
Like all of us, Aniston has days where the thought of working out just isn’t appealing. On those days, she tricks herself with a little psychology. When she’s feeling reluctant to jump on the elliptical, she tells herself that she only has to work out for ten minutes. By the time ten minutes have passed, she says that the endorphins have kicked in and she’s generally feeling good enough to keep going past her ten minute minimum.
5. Don’t be afraid to try new things…
While Aniston generally sticks to traditional health methods, she also enjoys a little experimentation. For example, beyond the basics of water, sleep, and sunscreen, Aniston likes the occasional microcurrent facial treatment to rejuvenate her skin. This treatment involves placing electrically charged pads on the face. The gentle charges stimulate the muscles of the face, which results in a tighter, more toned look, which can make you look and feel younger. “It’s like a little workout for your face,” Aniston told Instyle.
Aniston also takes pleasure in the occasional laser treatment for her skin, and has a soft spot for infrared saunas. An infrared sauna is similar to a traditional sauna. However, instead of heating the air around you, an infrared sauna used light to heat your body without changing the temperature of the room. That way, you can get the same effects of a normal sauna–sweating and increased heart rate, for example–at slightly lower temperatures, making it a good choice for people who struggle with the very high temperatures of a traditional sauna.
As you can see, while Aniston keeps simple tools like sleep, hydration, and exercise at the base of her self-care system, she also takes time to investigate new methods and experiment with ones that she likes.
6. …But keep it real
She may indulge in the occasional high-brow spa day, but overall, Aniston promotes a simple approach to wellness. When it comes to appearance and body care, she told Vogue, “It’s important to find something that’s simple and affordable—and easy.” Aniston likes the natural look, and promotes easy, straightforward methods of self-care. If she and her simple methods are right, the key to anti-aging might not be so unattainable after all.
It might seem a little hard to swallow coming from a beautiful celebrity, but Aniston’s belief that inner beauty trumps outer beauty seems to be genuine. Aniston believes that people should love themselves and take care of their bodies as they are, rather than wishing for something else. When asked by Vogue to describe her thoughts on beauty, Aniston said the following: “Emotionally and mentally, I would say it’s just about loving yourself and loving what you’ve been given—to really appreciate it and take care of it.”
